Tornado Safety: Understanding Watches, Warnings, and Emergencies
What's the Difference?
Tornadoes can strike anytime, and knowing the difference between a tornado watch, a tornado warning, and a tornado emergency can help keep you safe. The National Weather Service (NWS) issues three key alerts:
Tornado Watch
A tornado watch means that severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. It is an early alert that tornado-producing storms may form soon.
Tornado Warning
A tornado warning indicates that an ongoing storm may be producing tornadoes. If a tornado warning is issued, take immediate shelter.
Tornado Emergency
This is the highest level of tornado alert and means that a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar. Take immediate cover in a sturdy building or underground shelter.
